It’s that time of the year again, you know the one where it seems like we are in a constant state of prepping/celebrating for a new holiday even though it seems like we just got done with the one before it. People experience all sorts of emotions during the holidays. For example, you have the ones that adore the holidays and usually start decorating and putting their Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving. Others, wait for one holiday to be completed, before preparing for the next. Regardless, one of the most beautiful things about holiday celebrations is that every person/family has their own unique traditions, and fun little things they do to celebrate.

Speaking of unique, have you ever wondered how a person who is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experiences holidays? The word “Spectrum” is in there for a reason which is why it is so important to be mindful and inclusive so everyone can have an enjoyable experience. While the holidays are regarded with anticipation and joy for many families, families with children/teens/adults on the Autism Spectrum may have mixed feelings. During the holiday season, it is best to plan for what you can anticipate, and expect the unexpected.

One of the things we do at Mobile Therapy Centers is we coordinate holiday events that are individualized to cater to all the different needs of our awesome clients. The staff at Mobile Therapy Centers are experts at creating environments and choosing fun activities and games, while prepping for events that are highly enjoyable, and not overwhelming, for our clients. Here are some pro tips from one of our therapists to remember:
  • Holidays mean there is going to be a change in your normal routine. Many people with ASD thrive on routine and it can be extremely upsetting when it gets disrupted. One of the best ways to handle this is to start preparing them for it a couple of weeks ahead of time so they know what to expect, which in turn will hopefully minimize the anxiety of the unknown. You can do this by utilizing social stores, visual reminders, having a calendar set up in your home, highlighting when holiday celebrations will occur, explaining what that day will consist of, and even better, including them in the prepping process and asking if there is something special, they would like to do, etc.
  • Be mindful of sensory overload. If you have big get togethers to celebrate, it can be extremely over-stimulating for someone who has sensory sensitivities. Think of all the loud noises (a lot of people talking at once, multiple TV’s on – probably football, loud kitchen noises, all the different smells, etc.). It is important to have a quiet space available at all times to help regulate and to get away for a break if it all becomes too much.
