What is a developmental screening and why is it important?

Mobile Therapy Centers (MTC) is a multidisciplinary clinic that provides various services including Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Feeding Therapy and Counseling. MTC also provides developmental screenings and evaluations.

You may be thinking, what is a developmental screening and why would I have my child screened? According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA), screening refers to the process of identifying children who may need further evaluation to determine the presence of a developmental delay or disability. ASHA states that screening plays an important part in prevention, family education, and support that is particularly relevant for young children and their families. Early detection and intervention have been shown to have a significant impact on a child’s ability to overcome challenges and increase success in school and life.

What is a developmental screening and why is it important?

At Mobile Therapy Centers, we have Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Behavioral Therapists, and Counselors on staff. Therefore, our screenings provide a snapshot of skills within the areas of speech and language, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social-emotional functioning, and peer interactions. Along with the presentation of screening items with the child, the screening also includes input from the classroom teacher and the parent.

Parents elect to have their children screened for various reasons. Sometimes, it’s a reassuring checkpoint that your child’s development is age appropriate, sometimes it’s helpful to have a professional to consult with about your child’s skills, and sometimes there are specific developmental areas that you or your child’s teacher have concerns about. A screening may result in recommendations for rescreening, comprehensive assessments, or referral for other examinations or services.

In Franklin and Clarksville, Tennessee and Libertyville and Crystal Lake, IL, screenings can be accessed in various ways. MTC has partnered with many area childcares and schools to work with Directors to provide screenings on-site. This method has many benefits including a partnership with your child’s teacher in a comfortable setting  since it is happening in a space where your child is already familiar, and at ease. Because it happens at your child’s school, you do not have to schedule a separate appointment or bring your child to the clinic.

If your child does not attend childcare or school yet, you can also request a screening by contacting MTC directly. We are happy to work with you to schedule a time for you to bring your child into the clinic.
