Holidays are here and there is a lot to celebrate! Although, with that comes a whole lot of “newness” and changes in daily routines. There is no secret that change of schedules, or lack thereof, new people, new activities, new foods and drinks can be overwhelming.
Here at Mobile Therapy Centers, we understand that it can be even more difficult for families who have loved ones with Autism Spectrum Disorder as they may experience a more intense excitement or fear over the holiday seasons.
Here are a few tips that can ease the holiday tensions.
Visual Schedule:
These can be lifesavers, as they can give a sense of structure to those last minute to-do lists. Here is an example of one:
Create Social Stories:
These help prepare what is to come and what is expected of them. If they are meeting new family members or friends you can add a picture of them to help them become more familiar. Read it every day or night to help all the new information sink in throughout the upcoming weeks.
Practice/Role Play:
Traveling for the holidays? Show them as many pictures or videos of the place you are heading to. Help desensitize so that it is not as overwhelming when they arrive. If the place is not too far, it may be beneficial to drive there a few days earlier so that they have a sense of understanding of where you will be.
We hope that these tips are helpful in preparing your child for the holiday season. If you have any questions, please email us at asktheteam@mtcus.com. Mobile Therapy Centers hopes everyone has safe and Happy Holidays!
