Group Therapy

What is Group Therapy?

Group Therapy involves one or two therapists who lead a group of about five to 12 clients. Typically, groups meet for an hour to an hour and a half each week. Group Therapy focuses on a specific topic, behavior, or diagnosis, such as parenting, social skills, or anxiety and a particular population of people such as children, adolescents, or adults. Participants in Group Therapy take turns talking about their experiences around the particular topic, while the therapist acts as a facilitator during the sessions. Groups can last anywhere from six sessions to sessions for months or even years!

What is the difference between Group Therapy and Individual Therapy?

During Group Therapy, participants can learn from other group members’ experiences and perspectives. Individual Therapy, on the other hand, concentrates solely on an individual person’s concerns, emotions, and experiences.

What are some benefits of Group Therapy?

  • Group Therapy is a support network of participants sharing a similar concern. It is always validating to know that others want to learn more about the same topic, behavior or diagnosis as you are.
  • Participants in Group Therapy receive support from other members and are also able to give support to other members. Receiving and giving support develops a therapeutic alliance and a shared sense of goals between members that can lead to life improvement.
  • Group Therapy helps in the development of social and communication skills. Group Therapy provides a safe space for participants to express their thoughts and feelings. This can provide a good way to practice navigating social and communication skills with others.
  • Group Therapy helps participants learn new perspectives from other group members. Being part of a group gives you access to the ideas of several people who have had similar experiences and may offer new healthier perspectives or coping strategies.
