COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy practice gaining wide recognition for positive outcomes in research and clinical settings for improving daily functioning and quality of life. At Mobile Therapy Centers, our Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors and Behavioral Therapists often use CBT to work with clients of all ages in a collaborative manner to establish understanding of the problem, appropriate individualized goals, and therapeutic treatment plans.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

At the core of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the theory that our perceptions and beliefs about events strongly influence our emotions and behavioral reactions.

CBT may be effective treatment for a range of mental health conditions including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety disorders, anger issues, substance use problems, relational difficulties, pain and stress, post-traumatic stress disorders, and eating disorders. Over the years CBT has evolved to include various subtypes including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).

At MTC, our counselors help clients build awareness around interpretations and thought patterns that foster internal beliefs and impact behavior. Examples of cognitive behavioral goals are:

  • Expanding awareness of cognitive patterns and internal beliefs
  • Exploring values and behavior motivation
  • Processing emotional experiences and increasing emotional regulation
  • Learning healthy coping strategies to relieve symptoms
  • Developing positive communication skills and social relationships

CBT interventions focus on guiding the client to be their own examiner. Session activities and take-home exercises lead clients to learn independence in changing their own thoughts, emotions, and behavior for more fulfillment in daily living. Examples of CBT interventions include cognitive reframing, journaling, behavioral activation, exposure tasks, guided discovery, stress reduction techniques, mindfulness, and role playing.

Although CBT is gaining popularity for its accessibility, clear principles, skills-based approach, and efficacy, it is not a “quick fix” and requires collaboration and commitment from the client and therapist alike. Confronting fears and discomforts may be difficult at first, however necessary to work through them and move forward in healthier ways. At MTC, our therapists value relational safety and prioritize mental healthcare best practices to provide supportive, safe environments for our clients of all ages to grow.
